Hello 2012! First, a quick thank you to all of our clients, industry friends, and the wonderful Boardwalk staff for making our first 2 years a smashing success! It has been a whirlwind, with over 250 events under our belts since we opened our doors, all executed perfectly with 100% customer satisfaction!
The Saga Continues…
When Carolyn and I launched Boardwalk in 2010, there were no other photo booth companies in Hampton Roads. Since then, it seems that there’s a new photo booth “company” popping up about once a month, claiming to have “the best photo booth”, “the best staff”, and the “best picture quality.” We’ve seen them all, and actually researched many of them before deciding to have our booths custom fabricated to our specifications vs. buying into a franchise, purchasing a “turn-key” photo booth, or building a photo booth out of plywood and household curtains in our garage (seems to be a new trend in Hampton Roads). With 2012 heating up, and the bridal show season in full swing, we thought we’d take a moment to talk a bit about photo booth picture quality…
All of our vintage-inspired photo booths are equipped with identical Canon digital cameras and professional flash systems. Each booth also carries an identical backup Canon camera. To show off the true capabilities of our photo booth cameras, Carolyn and I decided it would be fun to grab one out of a booth a take it along on a recent Western Caribbean cruise. The photo booth camera was the only camera we took on our trip to capture all of the memories.
You’ll find a few images from our trip below.
Bon Voyage!
This my my first cruise, and I knew I would be amazed at the number of people that fit onto a cruise ship that was almost 1000 feet long. To this day, I am still so impressed with everything that has to come together to make sure 3000+ people are safely fed (and I mean REALLY fed), sufficiently entertained, and tended to like royalty. It’s a well oiled machine, folks. If you’ve been contemplating going on a cruise but are afraid you might feel claustrophobic, I must encourage you to take the plunge. We had the time of our lives.
A shot of “The Sanctuary”, an all adult oasis located near the rear of the ship complete with a private pool, multiple hot tubs, and spa services. There weren’t many kids on this cruise, so we never felt the need to “get away”, but it did look tempting…
One of things about the Crown Princess that Carolyn knew I would love was “Movies Under the Stars”, an outdoor movie theater with a jumbo screen right above the pool! At night, they put out blankets and pillows, and even rolled out a giant vintage popcorn machine. From The Social Network to Despicable Me, they had something for everyone. This was so, so cool!
Neither Carolyn or I are much on gambling, but we did stroll into the casino and hit the ol’ “one armed bandits” for a few. I think we were up about 5 dollars, but greed stepped in and we lost it all. We left the casino feeling battered and broken, but we managed to swallow our pride and carry on…
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of being in the Caribbean Sea on a cruise ship. It’s so quiet, and I don’t think I’ve ever felt so small. Standing out on the balcony of our stateroom, I looked West (I think), and realized that we weren’t actually alone…
The silhouette on the horizon looked ominous, so I decided that this would be a great time to test the zoom capabilities of the photo booth camera, just in case someone ever wanted an extreme closeup. After getting a closer look, I breathed a sign of relief – A Celebrity cruise ship – not the Black Pearl…
Our first Port O’ Call – The Cayman Islands
For anyone who’s been there, you’ll probably agree that the port in the Cayman’s isn’t quite the “island paradise” you were hoping for at first glance. It’s quite industrial and certainly not the prettiest place on the island.
For some strange reason, when we went to shore, we felt immediately welcomed.
We have no idea what purpose this little shack served, and there was nobody around to tell us. We were drawn to it’s color against the sky and had to get a picture.
Welcome to HELL!
Our first stop in the Cayman Islands was called “Hell.” It’s a total tourist trap, but inside you can buy a postcard and mail it back to the states, so when you get home you can tell everyone you sent them a “postcard from hell.” We couldn’t resist the temptation, so we jumped on the bandwagon and sent a few ourselves. Sure enough, that’s exactly where the postmarks said they came from. When you walk in, the old guy who owns the place screams “Welcome to Hell!” It’s a lot like walking into Moe’s for lunch, but way creepier.
Our next stop in the Cayman Islands was one that Carolyn had been anxiously awaiting. The fastest way to her heart? Not exactly what you’d think.
Everyone who knows Carolyn is probably aware of her love for turtles, so this was a must-do on our trip.
Our last stop in the Cayman Islands was Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville. We thought it would be a safe bet for food and drinks. This particular Margaritaville restaurant was different than others I’d been to. It was wide open with a DJ spinning reggae music and a really authentic vibe (vs. say, the Margaritaville at Universal Studios). The American dollar didn’t go far, though…a few tacos and 3 (delicious) Margaritas each set us back about $125.00. A far cry from all of the amazing free food on the ship, which was our next stop on this day.
Next Port O’ Call – Roatan, Honduras
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from Roatan, and during the month leading up to our trip gave Carolyn a hard time about choosing Honduras as a Port O’ Call. “Who in the world goes to Honduras, Carolyn?”…”Have you ever met anyone who’s been to Honduras, Carolyn.” Looking back at the trip, Roatan was probably my favorite stop on the cruise.
As we approached the island, we noticed quite a few ships that had run aground many years ago and are now permanent fixtures in Roatan. The channel is quite narrow, so the captain actually had to rotate the ship 180 degrees and back it into the docks. He did it with silky-smooth perfection. Here’s a shot off of our starboard side balcony as we were moving backwards into the harbor.
Once we disembarked in Roatan, we got a chance to look back and catch a shot of the stern of the Crown Princess from the dock. Notice the stranded ships decaying in background.
The island of Roatan was absolutely beautiful and FAR more welcoming than the Cayman Islands. After a short walk from the ship, we took some time to stop and smell the flowers…
We decided to do some snorkeling in Roatan, and were delighted when the guide took us to our own private beach!
After about an hour of snorkeling off the beach and another hour on the reef, we enjoyed a great lunch. We decided to take a walk around the island and were quickly greeted by a few of the locals…a bunch of wild monkeys! They come out around lunchtime to feast on the food left behind by the tourists. They were quite friendly and weren’t afraid to get close – taking food right out of our hands!
Back onto the beach – we ran across the only guy who’s job might be better than ours. This little plane took off and landed at least 20 times while we were there. It cost about $200 for two people to take a 10 minute flight around the island. When he wasn’t flying, he would beach the plane and read a book with his feet hanging out the window. Not a bad gig!
As our day on Roatan came to an end, it was time to get back on board the Crown Princess. We headed back to our stateroom to freshen up and caught a quick shot of the island from our balcony as we were sailing away. Roatan was absolutely gorgeous.
Next Port O’ Call – Cozumel, Mexico
I’d never been to Mexico, so I was truly excited about this stop. I had so many expectations – but what would MEXICO actually be like?
There were only a couple of things we really wanted to do in Cozumel. The first was to see the Mayan Ruins – which proved to be, well, ruined! There really wasn’t much to see here, and to be honest, it was kind of a disappointment.
Much more entertaining that the ruins themselves were all of the iguanas that called this area home. They were everywhere in all shapes, sizes, and colors. They were quite intimidating, but none of them made a run at us….
After the ruins, I stopped for some pole dancing…
After this embarrassing display, we were determined to find some authentic Mexican food and Margaritas. On the way to the restaurant, we spotted this really cool old doorway. Cozumel was full of color and texture like this, and I had to have a picture.
The cruise director told us we should hit up “La Choza” for the best chips, salsa, and Margaritas in Cozumel. The restaurant was fabulous.
As the day came to an end, it was time to head back to the ship. As we made our way through the streets of Cozumel, we stumbled into a tiny little bar full of locals. We decided to try a local brew and loved the “wild, wild, west” look of the bottles behind the bar.
If you’ve never stood next to a cruise ship, trust me when I tell you that this picture does not do it justice!
When we woke up the next morning…with banging headaches from our explorations in Cozumel, we were already moored just off of Princess Cay – the cruise line’s own private island in the Bahamas. It was absolutely gorgeous.
We spent about 3 hours snorkeling and relaxing in the sun on Princess Cay. Truly a masterpiece island for Princess Cruises. On the way back to the ship, we came across this super cool looking sign. It was one of the first times I stopped to think about how far I was from home.
…and home was our next stop after cruising back to Ft. Lauderdale to depart the ship.
We had a blast! To anyone who’s ever considered a cruise, we must encourage you to do so. Carolyn and I will likely never vacation any other way – ever!
If you’ve been thinking about booking a photo booth for your upcoming wedding or special event, we also encourage you to do so! Photo booths are true game-changers, giving your guests something new to do in addition to mingling, drinking, eating, and dancing. Best of all, our photo booths create instant party favors that last a lifetime!
Be sure to do your research when considering a photo booth company. All of the photos above were taken from one of our photo booth cameras, so just magine how amazing the photos taken from inside our photo booths look. Many of the photo booths that have recently invaded the Hampton Roads market use simple web-cams to capture tiny, grainy shots. Most don’t have a flash (never, ever settle for a photo booth without a professional flash system). Some are plastic, some are modular, some are plywood, and some were clearly constructed in someone’s garage. Carolyn and I pride ourselves in providing the best photo booths in the industry. Our booths are beautiful, fit well in any venue or atmosphere, take amazing hi-resolution photos, and come with something else that no other photo booth service can provide…Carolyn and I, our amazing staff, and 5-Star rated customer service!
If you’d like to learn more about our services, make an appointment to visit The Boardwalk Photo Booth Company Studio in Virginia Beach. We can discuss your event personally and you can test drive one of our vintage-inspired photo booths for yourself.
We’d love to see you!
